(ABC 6 News) - The U.S. Department of Education says only 16% of high school seniors are interested in a STEM career... continuing a trend where the United States is falling behind other countries. Here at ABC 6 News.. we want to spark an interest in those fields in young kids.
The ABC 6 Weather Lab is our initiative to get kids involved and excited not only about weather, but science too. Every month, the ABC 6 Weather Team will bring the Weather Lab to a new school, for a day of fun and learning.
We are excited to bring you the first Weather Lab of this school year.... Bonner Elementary. Last week the ABC 6 Weather Team went to Stewartville where these little Tigers pounced on learning more about the weather.
"It's a good way to start out the year. They are excited about their learning and from this point forward we can keep that excitement going," said Brittany Olson, 2nd-grade teacher.
Students were able to do hands-on experiments with the team while still learning. Students like Hunter Hysell said they enjoyed the whole thing.
"I haven't seen a big experiment in a long time," said Hysell.
Throughout the program, the kids were engaged and according to Principal Zane McInroy that is not a common thing.
"You can feel the energy in the crowd everyone was engaged, everyone was paying attention; everyone was excited it was a great opportunity for us," said McInroy.
The Weather Lab will be once a month at a different school. The next stop is Pine Island Elementary school in October.
If you are interested in having the Weather Lab come to your kid's school... head over to our website at www.kaaltv.com and click on the Weather tab.
While you are there... become a Weather Lab Assistant. Kids who complete an experiment and submit a photo of themselves with their completed experiment could be chosen on the next Weather Lab Wednesday to win our STEM box full of fun science gadgets.
