(ABC 6 News)- The Mayo Spartans Girls Swimming & Diving team stands undefeated in the Big 9 Conference, and has yet to lose a dual meet since 2013.

“The thing that makes us, that connects us is that we are extremely hard working,” Head Coach Juliet Parlette said.

“We are super supportive of each other and after every race everyone says good job to everyone and we work on being really encouraging,” Erin Todd said.

“They also know how to support each other and have a lot of fun.  Those two parts, hard work and one part fun does a really nice job of making this team really successful,” Parlette said.

Their success certainly shines through.  Senior Isabella Lichen broke the 2003 diving record at the Mayo vs. Century meet on Thursday.

“One meter six dive school record at 274.35 points which is exactly one point from the old record,” Lichen said.  “I got out of the water and I was like yes I broke the record, I was so excited.”

Isabella and the team are always striving to be better than the day before.

“I train really hard and I have the teammates pushing me and I want to stay with them,” Junior Edie Newman said.  “The girls in lane 6, I’ve been swimming with for a long time so I want to stay with that so that motivates me too.”

Coach Parlette is consistently challenging her swimmers to get to lane six, they call it the “rock star lane” which is the lane for the fastest swimmers.

“(They are) constantly trying to move up to the next lane and constantly (saying) what can I do better and they are looking at their times and they’re supporting but competing with each other,” Parlette said.

This is Parlette’s eighth season as the head coach for the Mayo Spartan swimming & diving team.  She has taken swimmers to state the past seven years and plans to do it again this year.

The Spartans next meet is on Saturday, September 30 at Austin Ellis Middle School for the Austin Packer invite.
