Pay it Forward: Ken Dose

(ABC 6 News) -- Thanks to the retirement plan of one Rochester native, hundreds of local people are getting free food.

"I was raised in a family that had a truck farming, truck gardening vegetable business," said Ken Dose, this week's ABC 6/Home Federal Bank "Pay it Forward" recipient.

After recently retiring from the fire department in Rochester, Dose came up with the idea to spend his free time building a garden at the Autumn Ridge Church.

"I thought about ways that I could use my time to do something for the community, something for people," said Ken.

Ken has spent countless dollars and hours giving back to the community he says has given him so much.

That's why Beth Postier nominated him for this week’s Pay it Forward award.

"Ken put his gardening skills to use to serve and show Jesus Christ love to everyone," said Beth.  "Fourteen tons of produce was harvested and Ken only gave away the good stuff."

He’s distributed the food to several organizations in town including Channel One Regional Food Bank and Community Food Response.

So with $600 in hand, we surprised Ken at the Rochester Library where he was finishing up driving the Bookmobile.

And just to add icing on the cake, his daughter made the drive from the cities to surprise him as well.

As for the $600 prize, Ken says he plans to put it to good use.

"When she handed me this, it's for me to spend for all my hard work and all that. But I think in all good conscious, I’ll probably put it back into the garden," said Ken.

Anyone can volunteer with the garden.

If you'd like to give your time, reach out to Autumn Ridge Church and sign up.
