Police: Man Goes on Bizarre Crime Spree in NE Rochester

November 17, 2017 06:38 PM

(ABC 6 News) -- Rochester Police said a 26-year-old went on a “bizarre crime spree” Thursday in a Northeast Rochester neighborhood.

Around 1:15 p.m. on November 16, law enforcement received a call from a 14-year-old who was home with her 17-year-old brother on the 1600 block of 7 ½ Ave. NE.  The teen told officers a man came into her room and told her, “I’m going to rob you and I’m going to kill you.”  The suspect described the man as black, in his 20’s, with dreadlocks and wearing a Chicago Bulls jacket.  According to Captain John Sherwin, the suspect took a water bottle he was holding and threw water at the victim.  He then started grabbing things in the room, said Captain Sherwin, and threw them at the victim.  At one point the suspect even sprayed deodorant at the victim, said Captain Sherwin.  The suspect eventually grabbed a pair of Air Jordan Tennis Shoes and took off.

Shortly after, law enforcement received another call from a couple in the same neighborhood with a report of a man who matched the same description as the first incident.  Captain Sherwin said a 79-year-old man and his 77-year-old wife had just returned home and were parking their vehicle in the garage, when they noticed the suspect walk into their backyard.  The man asked the suspect what he was doing in his yard, to which the suspect replied, “I’m going to punch you.”  Captain Sherwin said the suspect took off and ran into the garage where the woman was still waiting in the car.  The man approached the suspect again, and that’s when the suspect grabbed the glasses off his head and took off, said Captain Sherwin.

Another victim, who lives on the 1600 block of 7 ½ Ave. NE, called law enforcement and said the suspect entered her home from a back door.  The 78-year-old woman said she was startled, said Captain Sherwin, and told the suspect, “You scared me.”  The victim said the suspect mumbled something and then threw a shoe at her before taking off.

A fifth victim on the 1500 block of 8th Ave. NE called law enforcement and told officers she armed herself with a handgun after she heard a male’s voice in her home.  The 61-year-old victim said the suspect took off with an umbrella from her home.

Another home was targeted and a leaf blower was stolen from that property, said Captain Sherwin.

A number of Rochester Police officers quickly arrived to the neighborhood as the calls started coming in.  They were able to find the suspect who had a number of the stolen items still on him while other items were found throughout the area.  Captain Sherwin said the suspect, 26-year-old Kenneth Lewis of Anoka, Minnesota, began threatening officers and resisting arrest.  Officers eventually had to use a taser on Lewis, said Captain Sherwin, in order to get him inside the patrol car.

Lewis faces several first degree burglary charges.  He also faces charges for simple robbery, terroristic threats, obstruction, fleeing officers and drug paraphernalia.  Captain Sherwin said Lewis was wanted on a warrant in Sherburne County, Minnesota.
