(ABC 6 News) – There is some disappointment for two high school football teams that were forced to cancel Friday night’s game.
Adam Schroeder, the head football coach at Hayfield High School, said the school had to make the decision earlier this week based on how many players were going to be able to play.
"We don't have the numbers to play this week. We had a couple season-ending injuries last week and then a couple other guys that are dinged up," said Schroeder.
Hayfield's game against the Awesome Blossoms ended up in a forfeit and a missed opportunity to play at Blooming Prairie's homecoming day.
Lucas Noble, a senior on Blooming Prairie’s High School football team says it was a complete bummer.
"So now we have a freshman class who's missing out on that tradition and then a bummer for us seniors cause it's our last homecoming game," said Noble.
Chad Gimbel, the head football coach for Blooming Prairie says it’s a loss for both teams.
"My first reaction is disappointment you know and just knowing what the kids, what homecoming means to the kids and our boys," said Gimbel.
But both head coaches believe at least some good can come from this.
"Hopefully we can get them back and ready to play by next Friday where we, where we host Rushford-Peterson who's another tough team," said Schroeder.
Keeping athletes healthy is what's important for Friday’s to come.
"Footballs a great game and our kids look forward to Friday nights. Our community looks forward to Friday nights. And it's probably the most exciting time a lot of these kids will have and you feel bad for the kids that really truly love the sport and didn't get that opportunity to play for them," said Gimbel.
Still, there are no hard feelings at the end of the day.
"I'm like not mad at hayfield and I think it's the right thing if they feel like they risk injuries or injuring people worse or pushing a comeback instead of staying out and resting till they need, then I don't blame that at all," said Noble.
Both teams say they plan to re-energize and hopefully be back on the field playing their scheduled games next Friday.
