'Socktoberfest' Sock Sale Kicks off in Osage

(ABC 6 News) – Black Friday may be more than a month away, but if you visited the Mitchell County Fairgrounds, you’d be forgiven for thinking it was this weekend.

Hundreds lined up outside the fairgrounds event center in the rain Friday morning to be among the first in the door for the annual “Socktoberfest” Sock Sale.

Now in its 35th year, the sale started by mail before expanding to local storefronts and eventually to the fairgrounds, Judy Ott with Fox River Socks said.

“It's grown so large as you can see that we had to go to this event center to get it done,” she said.

One of the shoppers at the sale Friday was retired Cedar Falls teacher Sue Green.

“I bought some socks for me and my husband and then I bought a pair for each of my family members and I'll wrap them up and we'll open them at Christmas time,” she said.

In total, Green said she spent $135 on socks, including a donation to a program sending socks to soldiers.

The event also serves as a fundraiser for local groups, including the Osage Lions Club, Kiwanis and Rotary, whose members volunteered at the checkouts.

The sale continues from 9 to 6 on Saturday and noon to 3 on Sunday at the Mitchell County Fairgrounds.
